Cleaning & Spotting Jute Rugs
Cleaning a jute rug takes a bit of care since jute is a natural fiber that doesn’t handle moisture very well. Here’s the best way to keep it looking fresh and clean without damaging it:
🧹 1. Regular Maintenance: Vacuuming
- Frequency: Vacuum at least once a week.
- How: Use the suction-only setting (turn off the beater bar) to avoid pulling or damaging the fibers.
- Direction: Vacuum in the direction of the weave to minimize fraying.
💦 2. Spot Cleaning Spills (ASAP!)
Jute is very absorbent and can stain easily.
- Blot, don’t rub: Use a clean, white cloth or paper towel to blot up the spill immediately.
- Use a mild solution: Mix a little bit of mild dish soap with cold water (1 teaspoon in 2 cups water). Dampen (don’t soak) a clean cloth with the solution and gently blot the stain.
- Dry thoroughly: Use a dry towel to blot excess moisture, then air-dry or use a fan. Avoid heat and direct sunlight which can discolor the fibers.
☀️ 3. Deodorizing
- Sprinkle baking soda over the rug, let it sit for about 15–30 minutes, then vacuum it up.
- This helps with odors and can lightly freshen the rug without water.
⚠️ 4. Avoid These:
- Steam cleaning or soaking: Jute and water are not friends — excess moisture can cause the rug to brown, shrink, or develop mildew.
- Harsh chemicals or bleach: These can damage or discolor natural fibers.
- Using rug shampoos or carpet cleaners designed for synthetic rugs.
🧼 5. Professional Cleaning (Sometimes Best)
If it’s a large or heavily soiled rug, or you’re dealing with tough stains, call a professional who specializes in natural fiber rugs.
